I have known Pam Atkins, since 2007, when I came to manage the Engineering Business Office, which is in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). She provided general support to the whole office but more specialized assistance to both me and the Associate Finance Director, with meeting planning and other projects. I and a team of other associate deans and managers created a training program (Research Administration Training Program) that makes sure we put qualified folks in different areas of the Hopkins Enterprise, as it relates to research administration and financial functions.
Pam was very involved in the administrative support aspect of this endeavor. She was responsible for: 1) contacting and scheduling the candidates for interviews, 2) preparing and disbursing the electronic versions of interview packets to each committee member and 3) coordinating the 10-12 training sessions for each cohort of the program. My responsibilities require meetings with individuals across both the university and medical campuses. Many times, Pam needed to get up to 12 decision makers with demanding schedules, in a room to discuss time-sensitive projects and University initiatives. Somehow, she always managed it.
Pam was also involved in special projects and produced cost analysis reports to help me and the leadership team determine the best services to use in crisis management communication for the School of Engineering. She created a procedural document to use in reimbursing expenses for faculty candidates. Pam was also the designated contact for new faculty relocations and coordinated the resources between new faculty, movers and financial entities to help make it a seamless process.
Pam also served as the divisional floater, helping departments that had extended administrative needs. Her willingness to assist in this capacity helped save the division thousands of dollars and help promote goodwill between the Dean’s office and the departments. I would highly recommend Pam in an administrative support role. She will dedicate herself to making your job easier.
